Why A Copper Record Weight?
The Record Weight from PTA, now offered in solid copper.
Ah, copper! The metal of legends, alight with the warmth of a thousand sunsets, gleaming as if kissed by ancient gods. From the deepest annals of human history, copper has been an unspoken hero—carving its way into civilizations, birthing empires, whispering secrets in the language of alchemy.
Imagine, for a moment, the ancient craftsmen of Mesopotamia, hands worn from labor but eyes bright with ambition, forging their dreams with copper. This was no ordinary metal. Copper could bend, could shape, could shimmer like liquid fire. More than a tool, it was a muse.
Fast forward to today, where copper still reigns supreme, a testament to its unwavering brilliance. It is the quiet conductor of power, the glowing thread that stitches the world together, allowing whispers of power to hum through the halls of our modern lives. Yet, despite its utilitarian prowess, copper remains artful. Its rich hue, like burnished honey, transforms everything it touches from “mere art" into masterpiece.
Whether it’s adorning your wrist as a crafted bracelet or glimmering on the roof of a centuries-old cathedral or glowing on a German turntable, copper is more than a metal—it is a story. A story of resilience, of beauty, of a timeless elegance that has danced through the ages, never losing its luster. When you hold copper, you’re never just holding an object. You’re witnessing a piece of history, a kiss of the divine, a whisper of something eternal.
There is a reason why the vinyl playback masters at TW-Acustic in Germany have been favoring a copper record-platter interface for decades now. Nothing sounds better on vinyl than pure copper.
In the hand, The Record Weight is deceptively heavy. It is 800 grams and is machined from a solid bar of jewelry-grade copper.
The bottom still carries our name and logo. There, you'll find a tiny hole carved out to counterbalance the raised decorations on the opposite side — our famous pt.AUDIO Roundel, our logo since founding back in 2009 – the whole, a perfectly calibrated and balanced presence. On the top, you will notice that our Roundel sits on a raised disc — and yes, that disc is exactly the size of a 45rpm adapter! Just slip The Record Weight into the 45’s larger center hole, and you’re off.
Like our last effort, the sides are gently convex to make it easy to lift, hold, and place. Our new Weight, however, is flatter, wider, and more menacing, all the better to the hold your most beloved LP. But it is still massive for the same reason. As you know, wow and flutter in turntables can lead to odd and unpleasant sonic artifacts — as can record warp. A wide, heavy, balanced weight can help counteract these artifacts by keeping your vinyl flat, your turntable mass-loaded, and playback smooth as milk and honey. This is not a clamp — no fiddling or possible damage to your turntable’s spindle, here. Just place and go.
With the old Bronze weight, we did extensive user testing at AXPONA 2023 and 2024, facing off against the very best offerings in the market today, most of them many times more expensive than The Record Weight. In every test, in every listening group, with every record, and in every system, The Record Weight was at least as good as the most elite, most obscure, and most expensive offerings you could buy — and in most cases, substantially better. And the new Copper Weight? Head and shoulders better still.
But don’t take our word for it. Try it yourself. The size and feel of this thing are impossible to appreciate until it is in the hand — and on the turntable. We bet that you’ll have the same reaction that those AXPONA testers had — “Wow, this thing is incredible.” “It feels amazing.” “I don’t want to put it down.” “How much is this thing?” “Never heard better.” “You could put a hole in a tank with this thing.” “Where can I get one?”
The new Record Weight from pt.AUDIO is all new in Copper. Like all of our offerings, we are offering it only as a special, limited edition. When they’re gone, they’re gone.
